Early Acheulean (Est.+1,000,000 BP) Morocco, North Africa This curious, almost round stone, is a rudimentary form of axe, fashioned by the early Homo erectus and found along the terraces of Oued Tamanart in southern Morocco, over 1 million years ago. It is representative of the transition from the Oldowan period to the Acheulean complex and can be typologically dated to more than 1 million years old. These chopping tools were used as such but may well represent early cores when flake tools were needed. Elegant early specimen, fashioned from quartzite, it displays warm coloring in shades of pale brown and gray, attractively streaked with dark red-brown. Measuring 13.4 x 8 x 8 cm. Height with stand: 17 cm (2)
